Heineken

The story of Heineken begins in 1864, when Gerard Adriaan Heineken, just 22 years old, bought the De Hooiberg brewery in the heart of Amsterdam, then the largest of the 69 breweries in the city. Instead of the usual "workers' beer", Heineken opted for the Bavarian style, then considered more refined, a decision that triggered a rapid growth in sales and the construction of a new, larger brewery in 1867. The turning point came in 1886, when the company hired Dr. Elion , a student of the famous Louis Pasteur, with the task of developing a unique strain of yeast. After years of research, in 1886 the famous Heineken A-yeast was born, the secret ingredient that has been used in all Heineken breweries around the world ever since and that gives the beer its distinctive, rich and slightly fruity character. The quality was also confirmed by a series of prestigious awards at the end of the 19th century, including a gold medal in Paris in 1889. Today, four generations later, Heineken is one of the largest brewing companies in the world, present in more than 70 countries, and its green bottle with a red star has been a recognizable symbol of quality since 1873.
