Star anise is a spice made from the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum. It gets its name from the star-shaped pods from which the spice seeds are harvested and has a flavor reminiscent of licorice. Because of the similarities in taste and names, star anise is often confused with anise, even though the two spices are not related.
It is used as an addition to various mixtures of spices (powder), in marinades for meat, fish ... An indispensable ingredient for mulled wine, it combines well with oranges, cloves, cinnamon.
