The unique character of this 15-year-old whiskey is the result of selective maturation; a certain proportion of this hard drink is matured in carefully selected French oak barrels for a limited period, not to affect the final taste too much. Glenlivet was one of the first distilleries to use French oak barrels in the production of whiskey, after which many copied the same method. Limousin oak, harvested in the French region of Dordogne, is often used for maturing fine wines and cognacs. The low density of The Glenlivet whiskey allows deep penetration into the wood, which is why this expression is recognizable by its spicy aroma. French oak also enhances the intensity of whiskey which is why it has a rich and creamy finish.
